What is the game about?
Emily is Away Too is a rather basic experience despite all of the bells and whistles. It is divided into five chapters and follows your protagonist as she interacts with two females, Evelyn and Emily, over many months. It is simple to communicate with them. You select one of three possibilities and watch as your character writes out the text, occasionally backspacing due to episodes of adolescent anxiety.
Gameplay
The UI works in the same way that you’d expect an old-school chat client too. You can modify your avatar, adjust the quotations displayed in your profile, change the color of your font, and paint your backdrop black as sin. You may also browse your buddy list, although there’s not much to do there except laugh at the late-90s fashion excesses. Exposition occasionally takes precedence over character development, and the conversation rings a little hollow. Similarly, the females might appear to be stereotypes rather than people at times. Evelyn is the punk with hidden depths, and Emily is the gaming girl with a vision that will take her far away from this small town you share.

Characters
Both of the girls come off as joyfully realistic; insouciant teenagers in their final days of adolescence, fearful and thrilled for what the future hold. Their attempt at cool is mostly adorable, especially after the first chapter. Emily and Evelyn, like any other normal human being, take their time opening up, and when they do, it’s difficult not to care about them.
Simple challenges
The flaws are minimal, and they did not detract from the player’s enjoyment of the game. Especially not once the drama began. Without giving too much away, the game of Emily is Away Too is quite ingenious in its use of timers.
The finale
The conclusion might catch the player off guard, a bittersweet awful ending that made me cringe at how one minor error could wreck everything. In the game, the smallest details matter.
